June features the Pearl as one of its Birthstones.
Do you know anyone with a June birthday? Birthstone jewelry is always a perfect gift.
There are two options for the June birthstone. The most popular and widely known is the Pearl, which comes in pink, silver, cream, golden, green, blue, and black. It has a Moh's Hardness of 3-4, a Refractive Index between 1.52 and 1.66, with Black being 1.53 to 1.69. The pearl has a Specific Gravity of 2.6 to 2.78. The Principal Sources of pearls are Japan, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Manaar and The Coast of Central America and North Australia. Type of Pearls include: Mabe, Black mabe, freshwater and salt water. Care should be taken that pearls are not subjected to sudden temperature change. Wash them in lukewarm soapy water and re-string as old cord becomes worn. Knots should be tied between pearls to keep them from rubbing against one another. Apply perfume before putting on pearls. Fun Fact: Pearls are attributed to the Goddess Venus as the symbol of innocence. The size can vary between a pin head and a pigeon's egg.
Alexandrite is the other option. It shows a range of transparent colors, from blue to green in daylight to reddish-yellow in artificial light, and has a Moh's Hardness of 8.5. Its principle sources are: Sri Lanka, Rhodesia, Burma, Brazil, Maragasy Republic, Tasmania, and the United States.
